Cottagecore aesthetic: What it is and how to get the look

cottagecore-mood-board-2

🌼 Picture this: You’re in a quiet, peaceful, sunbathed garden full of leafy trees, and you see wildflowers everywhere. You’re picking a few to decorate the living room, so you calmly collect and place them in the wicker basket by your feet. Humming a Sufjan Stevens song while the birds sing in the background, you pick up the basket and slowly walk back to the cottage, your long flowy skirt swishing briskly through the long grass […] 🌼

Feels nice, right? Cottagecore mood is all about a more simple life like that, in a very romanticized almost unrealistic and dreamy way. Less or no technology, a deeper connection with nature, no rush, no stress…

Visually, the cottager loves soft colors mixed with earth tones, off whites and beige, and faded shades of blue, orange, pink and green. Objects in this aesthetic often have retro design and they’re full of sentimental meaning and personality 📜🕯

Don’t get this confused with hipster vintage stuff that cost a fortune, though. I’m talking really mundane (and even tacky) granny objects and handmade things! After all, this is supposed to be about a lifestyle, not just appearance.

Also, when I mention the simplicity and unbothered nature of this aesthetic it’s worth stressing that, contrary to the scandinavian style that has become popular in recent years and have a rustic cabin style vibe as well, the cottagecore is not minimalist. It would just be too cold and impersonal for a cottager 🤎🌸

You’ll not see any luxury either, nothing too flashy and no “trend of the moment”. The real cottage core is about the simple life, period. No matter how rich you are.

Some of the interests related to the cottagecore aesthetic are literature – especially the classics, art and nature. Home cooked food and homemade crafts and tools of all sorts are part of the daily life of the cottager, or they can often be considered a hobby.

When it comes to style, the traditional “feminine” look is the center of this aesthetic, so a lot of what characterizes the cottagecore is directly connected to it. How modest, how romantic and how rustic it will be will depend on personal preference, but there’s always some degree of the three involved. Accessories are dainty and fabrics are rich in texture or delicate and flowy.

And few options if you don’t like dresses or skirts:

Now, one of the coolest things about any aesthetic is the subdivisions that start popping up once it gets big. Bloomcore and Fairycore are some of the most popular ones derived from the cottage. There’s also lots of mixing and matching with other aesthetics like cottage academia, vaporwave cottage, naturecore, grandparentcore, summer cottage, witch cottage, etc!

🤎 In the imaginary world of the cottagecore aesthetic (cause, believe me, it’s imaginary. That’s NOT what it’s like to live in a farm, I know that well). Anyways, in that beautiful imaginary world it is always summer/spring, the sun is always shining and the mood is always positive and stress free. It’s easy to understand why many use this aesthetic as their favorite escaping mechanism. Who wouldn’t want that?? 🤎

Here’s a second mood board I created, now focusing more on the concept of the aesthetic:

And since I know you guy loooove this, here’s a list of my fav Cottagecore aesthetic emojis: ⏳😌📚🐮🦌📻🦋🐿🌳🍂🌼💭⌛🕰🍄🌰⛅🌙🍯🍓🪲🌧🥧🌻☕🎻🌱🧚🏽‍♀️⛰🌄🏡🕯📺💐🧺🗝✉📜✒🧶📝🌸🧦👒📬🦆🤎👩🏼‍🌾🐖🌿🍂🌞🍎🥛🛤🕰🖼

Here’s also a playlist to get in the cottage mood, no matter where you are. This is a great way to transport yourself mentally to the world of this aesthetic, regardless if you are in the middle of a huge noisy busy city or actually at a nice and cozy cabin 🙂

And finally, this is my faaaaaav cottage core music video. Let me know which one is yours in the comments below!

Hope you like this post. Make sure you check out the one wrote about the baddie aesthetic as well.

I’ll be back very soon with more aesthetic content for you guys 🎻✨

[…] You enter the little cottage, lay the basket on the kitchen table, grab an old victorian style cup and pour some herbal tea, sipping while you arrange the flowers in a vase. They look beautiful, so you take a deep breath, grab a book and proceed to sit comfortably in your favorite armchair by the living room window and get lost in your favourite book throughout the afternoon.
